Build Rapport Like a Pro

Are you a business entrepreneur trying to discover new ways to connect with people? Do you go to network events and tend to turn into a wallflower? Perhaps you’re paralyzed with fear at the thought of approaching other people.

These are legitimate issues that can stymie your development as a business professional. That’s the reason SRQ wants to offer a few pointers on how to improve in this endeavor, build a better rapport with people, and ultimately enjoy more success.

Pro Guide To Building Business Rapport

Learn how to listen and ask good questions.

First, you listen (attentively) to whomever you meet. Then you ask good probing questions related to the things they seem to enjoy. Doing this will get the other person on your side because they’ll respect the fact that you wanted to talk with them for their sake rather than just as an opportunistic “networker.” In business, you must give if you want to receive, and this is especially true with networking conversations.

Make recommendations.

All entrepreneurs should know the value of good elevator pitches and “calls-to-action” with regards to their products and services, something that comes in handy at networking events. Whether you make recommendations for your services or others that you enjoy, this is yet another way to assist your new business companion, therefore giving them a reason to trust you. Making thoughtful insights and suggestions ensures that you’re somebody they’ll want to speak with again at some point.

Buy a drink to break the ice.

Do you need a quick way to win somebody’s favor? Buy them a drink or something simple as a token of friendship. Most people, including business professionals, respond well to small acts of kindness and will become open to discussion thereafter.

Don’t go alone.

How many people make the mistake of going to a social gathering by themselves, only to find out that they do not know ANYBODY at the party? This is common and you should plan your networking activities accordingly. If you go to a business mixer and aren’t sure whether you’ll encounter anybody familiar, then bring a friend. You don’t even have to take somebody whose business savvy (though it helps). If you at least have a pal to chat with you when everybody is busy, you’ll feel a lot more comfortable. Just don’t use your “wingman” as a crutch. Use them to springboard into conversations with others.
